About the event

This is an introductory course to block printing. We will sketch a design inspired by botanical illustrations or cuttings from your own garden, and learn how to translate it into positive and negative space. The design will be transferred to a block, and you will learn to use carving tools to create your stamp. Finally we will print using ink pads. You will bring home a unique stamp to create your own paper goods such as cards and gift wrap. All materials are included.

Participant fee: $75

Age: High school and up

Please be advised: this class requires participants to handle and work with sharp tools.

About the artist

Jennifer Zee is a Chinese American printmaker based in San Francisco. With lifelong dual interests in biology and art, she has achieved a Masters of Science in Biology, a Masters of Fine Art in Art and Design and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies. After experience working at nature museums in both research and creative contexts including scientific illustration, Jennifer refocused her attention to the fine arts. She now dedicates herself to block printing natural science subjects, often combining organic form with geometry. Jennifer is an active artist and art teacher in her local community, and is passionate about using her art to inform her audience about biodiversity and conservation, as well as social justice with a focus on Chinese American experience.
