Exhibition Garden Improvement Project
Reopening Summer 2019

-
The Exhibition Garden is currently closed to all visitors, staff, and volunteers for an exciting, major improvement project.
-
We are very excited to improve this space and hope to complete the work by summer 2019.
-
This space is designed to be primarily utilized for Botanical Garden guests and will showcase iconic plants from many of the Garden’s collections. In addition, programs, exhibitions, and events will also take place in this Garden.
-
The work being done as part of this project includes the installation of new ADA accessible pathways, new plantings, and irrigation.
-
Garden staff partnered with the local, award-winning, design firm Lutsko Associates Landscape to design this new space. This is the same firm that originally designed the Arthur Menzies Garden of California Native Plants here in the Botanical Garden which won an ASLA Northern California Chapter Honor Award for Design in 1990.
-
The new planting design ensures year-round beauty using bold textures, a distinct color palette, and display iconic Garden plants.
-
Previously existing plant material has been inventoried by Curatorial and Horticultural staff and managed according to their recommendation with plants being moved, harvested for propagation, and others composted.
-
The beautiful, existing Thomas Church Pavilion will be preserved. The new design opens up many vistas that bring the Pavilion better into view from many key vantage points. Other previously existing structures will be removed.
-
The Exhibition Garden is 1.63 acres.

-
This is a $1 million project with 1/3 being funded by a private challenge gift from a generous board member and donor, 1/3 by from the Recreation and Parks Department, and 1/3 yet to be raised.
