What beautiful weather we ended up having for our Thursday!
Still learning about Extraordinary Ecosystems, today our campers had a large focus on California Native Plants. The goals we had for our day included recognizing some California native plants and learning about how those plants support native wildlife.
After settling down in the California Native Garden, our campers had a blast playing California Native bingo! They got to learn all about different plants that are native to California as well as how different cultures have used them! Some plants have been used for eating, others are medicinal, but no matter what all of the plants we learned about are incredible.
Campers spent some more time in the native garden with Ingrid. With Ingrid they painted using water colors. Their focus was either on plants that were native to California, or plants that were native to our own ancestry. We also learned a lot about what makes a plant native or what makes a plant nonnative.
With AJ campers had a blast doing some habitat exploration. Campers got to take magnifying glasses and flip over logs while looking for bugs. Some things that they found include earwigs, beetles, salamanders, and California Native snails!
At the end of the day we had a special visit from some of our friends who work in the Garden - Gretchen and Nicole. Gretchen and Nicole led a few different stations for our campers to engage with. We had a traveling worm bin from the Children's Garden come through that was a big hit! We also learned all about some different plant parts and the jobs that they do. They were able to use plants that had been collected from the Children's Garden to label.
Questions For My Camper:
-Did you learn anything new about plants native to California?
-What did you paint during watercolor time? Why did you choose that?
-Which station did you choose at the end of the day? Why?
We've had a great week so far and we can't believe that tomorrow is already Friday.
If you are interested in learning a little bit more about what we did this week with our groups, we invite you to join us on Friday at 3:15pm. Our campers will sit in circles with their groups and discuss different things they learned and review different activities they participated in together. We will ask you to sign-out your camper upon arrival to our Open House but you are welcome to stay until your group has completed their circle time. We will begin transitioning from our Open House to Pick-Up around 3:45pm. At this time you are welcome to head out with your camper.
All the best,
