June 20th

Greetings!

Today at camp we had the opportunity to learn all about ponds and the Extraordinary Ecosystems that ponds have.

This morning we started off our day by attempting to create Fog in a Jar. It wasn't as cloudy as our friend Karl the Fog normally is, but we were still able to talk about fog and learn some facts about the water cycle as a large group.

We've spent a lot of time as a large group this week, but today we split off into our regular Walnut and Cedar groups. Both groups spent a lot of time at the pond with AJ while learning about healthy pond ecosystems and unhealthy pond ecosystems. After learning the important, healthy parts of an ecosystem, the campers had an opportunity to draw both healthy and unhealthy ecosystems on their own. While they spent their time at the pond they observed turtles and birds and fish, talking about all of the important things that go together to create a good habitat.

Today with Spencer our campers were able to do some Mindful Tea Tasting. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to sample the tea myself, but our campers found it very sweet. It was a medley of different herbs: mind, pineapple mint, borage, and chamomile. After they sampled the tea campers were able to draw some of the plants that were added. Once they finished that they got to make their own tea doilies, all laminated for safe keeping!

Questions For My Camper:

-Did you try the Mindful Tea? What did it taste like? How did it feel to drink something that you helped make?

-What are some of the things you observed at the pond? Can you tell me one healthy thing for a pond ecosystem? What about one unhealthy thing?

We're looking forward to our last day of camp tomorrow where we'll keep learning all about ecosystems--this time focusing on the California Native Garden!

We've had a great week so far and we can't believe that tomorrow is already Friday.

If you are interested in learning a little bit more about what we did this week with our groups, we invite you to join us at the Great Meadow on Friday at 3:15pm. Our campers will sit in circles with their groups and discuss different things they learned and review different activities they participated in together. We will ask you to sign-out your camper upon arrival to our Open House but you are welcome to stay until your group has completed their circle time. We will begin transitioning from our Open House to Pick-Up around 3:45pm. At this time you are welcome to head out with your camper.

Thank you so much for choosing Garden Camp and sharing another wonderful day with us!
