Introduction to Winter Fruit Tree Pruning at the Children's Garden

Learn how to maximize tree health and fruit production by identifying and properly removing dead, damaged, and dying wood. Our instructors will go over general pruning techniques, discuss the differences between summer and winter pruning, and lead a hands-on demonstration so that you can learn which cuts to make in the winter to keep your trees healthy and productive. Following the workshop, you can put your newfound skills to use at the Children’s Garden orchard!

About the instructors: Jamie Chan and Erick Monroy:

Jamie and her partner tend a small homestead in San Francisco with their two girls, complete with honeybees, chickens, greenhouse, mini-orchard, and vegetables. Jamie has an MS in science and a doctorate in education from SF State University. She has been a certified UC Cooperative Extension Master Gardener since 2015 and currently director of programs at the Gardens of Golden Gate Park. In their free time, you can find her volunteering at her local community food security garden @SisterhoodGardens and running her garden education company @FogCityGardener.

Erick has tended to many gardens over the years and even had backyard chickens in San Francisco. Erick has a bachelor’s in environmental studies with a minor in education from San Francisco State University. He was formerly part of a Non-profit tree care company where he pruned fruit trees at SFUSD schools and helped install drought-tolerant sidewalk gardens all around the city. Now he is the Garden Educator at Gardens of Golden Gate Park. He has carefully tended the Children’s Garden learning landscape in the SFBG since 2015. In his free time, he likes going on hikes and volunteering in the community.
