Growing near the Conservatory (constructed in 1879), newly planted Monterey cypress trees (Cupressus macrocarpa, recently renamed Hesperocyperus macrocarpa) have created an appealing landscape. By this time the Park had quickly become a popular destination. By 1874, Hall reported, “Some 255,000 visitors entered the grounds through the main avenue for objects of pleasure and exercise.”
